Youth Politics Festival: Think Global, Speak Local
What’s the most important global issue for young people in Scotland today? Human rights? Poverty? Climate
change? Are you between 12 and 25* and want your opinions heard? Then come along to this unique event, make your views known and tell the Scottish Parliament what you think. This isn’t for those who want to sit quietly and just listen to politicians - your participation is essential! Look out for e-voting, speed info-dating, satellite link-up with young people in other locations, and a special guest speaker.
The 4 topics to be discussed are:
-
Make medicine affordable for all
-
Invest more in renewable energy
-
Develop economies sustainably
-
Being yourself without threat/fear
The SYP is working with Young Scot, YouthLink, SCCYP and Carnegie to run an event in Dunfermline and Edinburgh on Saturday 23rd August. If you’re interested in taking part then email info@carnegiefestival.com. We really need loads of young people to show the folks at the Festival of Politics that young people are interested in the world around them!
Have your say on Scotland's future!
Should we become independent? Should we protect the Union? Whatever you think, Scotland's constitutional future is a hot topic at the moment, with two different consultations on the go - one by the SNP government and one led by a coalition of other major parties. The SYP is keen to make sure that young people's voices are represented in the discussions, so to avoid being drawn into a potentially party-political debate we've created a survey which we will use to form the same submission to both consultations.

Inverclyde Youth Festival
The Inverclyde Youth Festival 2008 is being organised by the Inverclyde Speak Up group. It's a 4 day celebration of young people in Inverclyde. There is a different event on each day of the festival.
Friday 8th August: Comedy Night with Des McLean
Saturday 9th August: Under 18s Foam Party with Ultrabeat
Sunday 10th August: Youth In The Park with Hollyoaks Calvin Valentine
Monday 11th August: MacDonald Bros Live in Concert
The good people at Inverclyde Council want to invite young people from all over Scotland to the festival either for the full 4 days or for specific events.
They would be able to offer free tickets for the foam party and discounted tickets for the concert. Additionally all the activities at Youth In The Park are free.
If anyone is interested in coming along or wants more information please don’t hesitate to get in contact with Mark Molloy on 01475 715450 or mark.molloy@inverclyde.gov.uk . Alternatively, your local support worker should have been sent details of the event too, so they should be able to tell you a bit more about attending too!

UKYP Elections Reform: Project Engage
UKYP have secured funding to look at how they can engage with young people outside of the school environment and are now looking to put together a group of young people up to age 20 who have knowledge of the organisation to form a steering group.
T
here is a residential coming up on 29th-31st August in Lincolnshire, and anyone interested must be able to commit to attend the residential, as that will form the basis for all the plans/resources/DVD etc., that are to follow. Naturally, all travel, food and accommodation is paid for by UKYP and no young person will be out of pocket by being involved in this exciting project. They will also be working with professional film makers to commission a DVD that can be used with all young people. If you are interested, contact Paul Boskett asap on paul.boskett@ukyouthparliament.org.uk.

Community Woodland Photography Competition
Community Woodlands Association (CWA) invites you to take part in their Photography Competition. There are 3 age categories ranging from 0 to 100+ so everyone can take part, all you need is a digital camera! You have the whole summer to get out there and discover your local woodlands and to tell them what they mean to you. Closing date is 1st September 2008. Please make sure you read the rules and complete an entry form for each of your images. The documents can be downloaded from their website www.communitywoods.org
A community woodland is one partly or completely controlled by the local community, through a Community Woodland Group. The woodland may be owned or leased by the group, or managed in partnership with another organisation, such as Forest Enterprise. There are currently over 200 groups across Scotland. A location map on the CWA website www.communitywoods.org will show you a wood near to you. Your photo doesn't have to be of a community woodland however, just a woodland that inspires you.
